Official Image Quality Requirements for Engraving Artwork

At SageTech Labs and Switched Style, our mission is to transform ideas into clean, precise, and beautifully detailed engravings. To deliver the premium quality our brand is known for, all submitted artwork must meet the following image requirements. These standards ensure every engraving reflects the sophistication, craftsmanship, and functional design that define our products.

1. Approved File Formats

Preferred (Best Results)

  • SVG, AI, EPS, PDF — Ideal for logos, icons, and line art.

Accepted (High-Resolution Only)

  • PNG, JPG/JPEG — Must meet minimum resolution standards.

Not Accepted

  • Screenshots (phone or desktop)

  • Files pulled from social media

  • Blurry or compressed images

  • HEIC files (unless converted first)

2. Minimum Resolution Requirements

Raster Images (PNG, JPG)

  • Minimum: 300 DPI

  • Minimum Size: 1500 × 1500 pixels

  • Ideal: 300–600 DPI with 2500+ pixel longest side

High resolution = cleaner lines, sharper detail, and a flawless finished engraving.

3. Vector Artwork Standards

Vector files are strongly preferred for engraving and will always produce the cleanest results.

Requirements:

  • All text must be outlined / expanded

  • No embedded raster images

  • No hairline or ultra-thin strokes

4. Image Clarity & Lighting

Engravings rely entirely on contrast and visible detail.

To ensure accuracy:

  • Images must be clear and in focus

  • Subjects should be well lit with minimal shadows

  • Avoid reflections, glares, or busy backgrounds

For portraits or pets: eyes, outlines, and key features must be clearly visible.

5. Line Weight Guidelines

Our engraving process cannot reproduce extremely thin lines.

  • Minimum Line Weight: 1 pt (0.35 mm)

  • Recommended: 1.5–2 pt (0.5–0.7 mm)

Thin or delicate strokes may engrave faintly or disappear entirely.

6. Grayscale & Conversion Notes

Engraving is a single-color, depth-based process.

Because of this:

  • Artwork will be converted to black and white engraving format

  • Gradients, soft shadows, and fine textures may need adjustment

  • Some images may require a professional redraw (optional service)

7. Artwork We Cannot Engrave

To protect customers and our brand integrity, we cannot engrave:

  • Copyrighted images without written permission

  • Watermarked photos

  • Low-resolution or pixelated files

  • AI-upscaled images that do not meet clarity standards

8. Submitting the Best Artwork Possible

For the cleanest and most professional engraving:

  • Always provide the highest resolution version available

  • Send vector files whenever possible

  • Avoid screenshots or compressed mobile images

  • Ensure logos have solid, bold outlines

9. Artwork Verification Process

Every image goes through a review by our engraving team.

If your file does not meet the minimum quality requirements, you will receive:

  • A clear explanation of what needs improvement

  • A request for a higher quality file or

  • Options for file clean up or vector conversion (additional fee applies)

This ensures your final engraving meets SageTech Labs’ craftsmanship standards.
